Ways South Texas Homeowners Can Lower Heating BillsAnything you can do to lower heating bills will help you save more money this winter. Keep in mind that it’s much more comfortable to tackle projects that promote energy efficiency during the winter than in the summer. Improving your home’s energy efficiency doesn’t have to involve a big investment of time or money.

Air Infiltration

Air moving into and out of your home raises energy bills, but most leaks can be sealed with weatherstripping, caulk and expanding foam.

Weatherstripping around exterior door frames, including the door leading from your attached garage, can help stop air leaks. If there’s a gap at the bottom, consider installing a door sweep or use draft blockers. Caulking around exterior window frames can also help seal cracks. When choosing caulk, avoid silicon-based formulas if you intend to upgrade the windows. Of all the caulk types, silicon is the most difficult to remove.

The most common air leaks into the attic occur via recessed lighting, flues, vents and exhaust fans. If you’re not familiar with sealing around wiring, it might be safer to hire a contractor to help with this project. Even with the fireplace damper closed, air can still enter and leave through the chimney. A chimney balloon can plug the chimney to lower heating bills.

Insulation

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends at least 10 inches of insulation in the attic for residents of our region. While your attic may have adequate insulation, heat can still leave your home during the winter or enter during the summer through the attic hatch or door. Applying an insulating product, like a fiberglass batt or a piece of rigid foam insulation, can help your home retain energy.
